MEETING Thursday 17th January 2019

Our speaker this month was Dr Becky Peacock, who gave us a comprehensive talk about the Development of the Mid Hants Railway – The Watercress Line; how the line was purchased and rebuilt by volunteers (this included relaying the actual tracks as well as the rolling stock and engines), and all the problems they had to overcome right up to the present, with the current issue of the rebuilding of the bridge at the Butts in Alton.

We will not hear the trains and their whistle again until the end of July when the trains will resume their full journey to the station at Alton.

She also pointed out that we need to get behind ‘Friends of Alton Station’ if we wish to prevent the historic 1892 timber footbridge over the main line being removed. The Mid Hants Railway management have no say about the fate of this bridge, the loss of which seems a shame when it adds so much to the character of Platform 3 at Alton station and Mid Hants railway have done such a good job of rebuilding and developing the Watercress Line.
